Let’s face it, we all find reasons to procrastinate, even when tackling something that is important to us. Why do we do this?
In my case, mostly it’s simply because I need to do something that I just don’t want to do! So, I wait until the last minute to get started. Occasionally, it’s because I’m truly not prepared yet; I’m still sorting through my thoughts and ideas. And sometimes, I delay because I prefer to complete a task in one go rather than revisiting it multiple times for edits and adjustments. I’ve found that preparation makes the creative process much smoother.
Experts offer a variety of explanations for procrastination. We might underestimate how much time is required or fail to read instructions early on, which ultimately requires additional time (especially if we make a mistake). Overconfidence in our own abilities can also leave us short on time. Sometimes, we simply find other activities more appealing and postpone what needs our attention until the last minute, or beyond. Overthinking, especially negative thoughts about our own capabilities, also contributes to delays. There are other experts who attribute procrastination to frustration, anxiety and depression. Some experts even suggest that our brains trick us into believing that tasks will be easier to complete later.
Given these theories, how do we overcome this challenge?
- Manage Your Time Effectively. Be mindful of the amount of time tasks require. Block out time on your calendar, plan steps in manageable chunks and start early.
- Team Up. Partner with someone who shares your project goals. Collaborating can provide motivation and support to help you stay on track.
- Break It Down.Divide tasks into smaller, achievable parts. Completing smaller portions first boosts motivation and gives a sense of progress which will help you feel ready to tackle the next part.
